EFT (tapping)
Could a few well-placed taps on your body be what it takes to help reduce stress and even ease physical pain? It may sound unbelievable, but there’s some compelling science behind the Emotional Freedom Technique, more commonly known as EFT tapping. What Is EFT Tapping? EFT tapping involves using your fingertips to gently tap on specific points on the body, mainly on the face and upper body. While tapping, you focus on a problem—such as stress, anxiety, or pain—and repeat simple, positive statements. The technique is based on ideas from traditional Chinese medicine and modern psychology. How Can It Help? Researchers think EFT may help by: •Calming the body’s stress response, which can lower feelings of anxiety. •Helping you face and reframe emotions, similar to techniques used in therapy. •Providing a soothing physical sensation, which can promote relaxation. What Does Research Say? Studies have found that EFT may help reduce: •Stress and anxiety •Symptoms of PTSD •Depression •Chronic pain However, scientists are still studying how well it works, and some believe the benefits may be due to relaxation or placebo effects. More research is needed. Basic Steps to Try EFT 1.Choose a problem (for example, “I feel stressed”). 2.Rate the intensity from 0 to 10. 3.Create a setup statement, such as: “Even though I feel stressed, I accept myself.” 4.Tap on key points (side of the hand, eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, under the arm, and top of the head) while repeating a reminder phrase like “this stress.” 5.Rate the feeling again and repeat if needed. Is It Safe? Yes, EFT is generally safe and easy to learn. However, it should not replace professional medical or mental health care, especially for serious conditions. Working with a trained therapist can be helpful for deeper emotional issues. In Simple Terms EFT tapping is a gentle self-help technique that combines touch and positive thinking to help people feel calmer and potentially reduce pain.
